This isn't really creepy or mysterious, but interesting nonetheless. Rails-to-Trails has converted an old railroad bed along the Lehigh River from White Haven, PA to Jim Thorpe, PA into a hiking/biking trail. There are a lot of abandoned structures along the route, a few right along the trail that you can't miss. There is a cylindrical turret-like structure right alongside the path. You can also find the concrete abutments and piers from a more modern railroad structure that once went overhead.
If you follow this trail in the summer, there are many other structures hidden in the dense foliage. Find a nice mild day in late fall, winter or early spring and keep an eye on the area between the trail and the river. There are at least two old locks, which were once part of a canal. They are very high and intricately built stone by stone. Also, watch for spots where water passes under the trail where there is no bridge. There is at least one old arch culvert with a keystone dating to the 1800's. You can also find old sections of canal and portions of stone wall. Keep your eyes open!
Near the end of the trail, you will pass an old railroad tunnel on the far side of the rive. Keep following the trail and after you cross the river you will find the other end of the tunnel. You can walk all the way through and look out over the edge down into the river. Also, if you find a section of hillside that looks like it has been excavated or eroded, look closely for quartz crystals. Last time I was there, I left completely loaded down with quartz from an exposed vein.
To get there: From I-80, take exit 40 into White Haven. Make your way to the river and follow it to the I-80 overpass. The trail begins around there.
