I have been rather surprised not to read anything about weirdness in Cornell. If nothing else there is always the Suicide Bridge. But I have something that I think is much more on the weirdly interesting side of things. I was visiting a friend who lives in the rental homes just off the campus. As a matter of fact, she lives about one minute from the suicide bridge. But, on with the story...
She was showing me around the campus one evening, telling me some of the goofball stories that circulate through the student body. On the way to the bar on the other side of campus we stopped at the non-denominational church. I am not the most religious person, but I love churches, chapels, temples, etc. As I was looking around the very different church, I saw a sign for an old bomb shelter.... now that just asks for investigation. I went down the stairs to see... nothing of interest. It was a hall that lead to some small offices. Along the walls of the hallway, were four by four shelving units sunk into the wall with doors over them. Being a nosy son of a bitch, I started opening the doors to the shelves. They were full of videos of ceremonies at the church. As I began to get bored I opened one last small door in the wall. A freezing blast of air hit me and when I opened my eyes again I was looking under the church. It was a dirt room that stretched maybe thirty feet away from me to a one by two window. Just as I was thinking about climbing in and looking around for some antiques or something to add to my collection of weirdness, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. Then out of the gloom I heard what can only be described as whispered wailing. It was too quiet to really hear, but it was there. I was overwhelmed with the need to get out of there. So, having dealt with many strange places and occurrences in the past (I go looking for trouble with spirits) I got the hell out of there.
