Underlying Elberton, Georgia is one of the world’s largest deposits of granite. In 1979, a man known as R.C. Christian arrived to commission an American Stonehenge. The nineteen-foot high monument, weighing 119 tons, consists of five vertical “standing stones” and a capstone. Carved on the stones are ten New Age Ten Commandants in English, Chinese, Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Hindi, and Swahili. The idea was that the monument, which was erected on a high hill north of Elberton on GA 77, would survive a worldwide holocaust and provide guidance for the dazed survivors.
Strange events accompanied every phase of construction. Charlie Clamp sandblasted 4,000 characters into the granite, and even through his sound-proofed gear he heard voices and strange music. Men laying the foundation also detected eerie music and were often rendered dizzy. At the dedication, a local minister declared that the stones were “for sun worshipers, for cult worshippers, and for devil worship”—the messages promoted a one-world government that he believed would be presided over by the Antichrist. When the preacher left, a “witch” promptly set about consecrating the monument.
In September 1982, a UFO (a bright light twenty feet in diameter) was witnessed hovering near the stones. Christians, Druids, Native Americans, and assorted other groups have gathered at the site for ceremonies. According to legend, visitors who point both arms toward the stones with one palm up and the other down will receive a psychic message about the monument. Whatever your purpose at the stones, one thing’s for sure: if your trip to Georgia includes a stop at the Guidestones, it won’t be lacking in weirdness.
