Tallest Cross

Towering 208 feet above Matanzas Bay in St. Augustine, this metallic cross is the largest religious cross in Florida. It also marks the landing spot where Spanish explorers on September 8, 1565 planted the first Cross of Christianity in the New World. It was here that in 1615 the Mission of Nombre de Dios was established. You can still visit the ancient Chapel, however, it is not so ancient, as it was really built in 1915. The original one was damaged during an attack on St. Augustine and later wiped out by a hurricane. The tall cross is lighted at night and is open to the public.
