Southernmost Point

There’s always a swarm of tourists buzzing around this thing at the end of Whitehead Street in Key West. It’s the Southernmost Point in the United States just 90 miles from Cuba. This spot is closer to Havana than it is to Miami. There used to be just a sign here but some of you thieving tourists kept stealing it for a souvenir, so in 1983 this big buoy was put up as the marker. I’d like to see you try to steal that big heavy thing. Actually, this is not the Southernmost Point, I walked several feet south of the marker and the adjacent Navy base sticks out much further south, but for tourists this buoy marker will have to do.
