Possum Monument

In the Northwest Florida community of Wasau there’s a tall granite monument dedicated to the possum. The marsupial memorial is to recognize the possum for providing food and fur to humans during hard times. In 1982 the Florida Legislature passed a joint resolution proclaiming the first Saturday in August as “Florida’s Possum Day.” Wasau celebrates “Possum Day” each year with a “Possum Festival” and the election of a Possum King and Queen. The festivities are held at an arena called Wasau’s “Possum Palace.” I would assume that if they serve possum that it comes with sweet potatoes.
