THE PHILLIPS MAUSOLEUM

Calvin C. Phillips of Tallahassee believed in planning ahead, even for his death. In 1900 Phillips built the first mausoleum in the city’s Oaklawn Cemetery. The strange tomb was twenty feet tall and topped in the center with a minaret. It was so large that if he had not died, he could have lived in it. After constructing his mausoleum, Phillips hired a carpenter to build a fancy cherry wood coffin. Phillips then had the coffin placed inside the mausoleum and then crawled inside his coffin and died. In his planning he had given a key and lock to a friend so the vault could be locked after his death. And that was the end of Calvin Phillips…or was it? It is known as a haunted crypt where some say you can feel the presence of Calvin’s ghost.
